ABOUT DAVID BARCLAY MOORE

Please contact info@davidbarclaymoore.com to schedule literary readings and photography exhibitions.

The current focus of David Barclay Moore's work examines Black male cultures and how they interact with and influence other cultures. The Black/Queer Film & Lecture Series is a program put together to explore these ideas within an institutional setting before an audience.

The program features the screening of three short films all dealing with Black queer masculine identities. These shorts are followed by a lecture, entitled, "Being Real: Black Queer Cultures and the Struggle for Identity." A brief Q&A session will follow the lecture.

The short documentary films “Realness” and "Dr. Al's Rebels" were created by a commission from the Ford Foundation and ITVS for the Masculinity Project. However, the Black/Queer screenings of these films are longer 'director's cuts.' The third film short to be screened, "Race and Sex," is only available through the Black/Queer Film & Lecture Series.

In "Realness" the central subject of the documentary, Tika, is in the process of transitioning from Black female to Black male. Tika and Tika's girlfriend discuss views on Black male privilege and confront the very essence of the value of appearing male.

"Dr. Al's Rebels" explores the life of a Black male couple running an all-Black gay softball team and raising three young children. The two discuss their relationship, the uniqueness of their team and the hurdles involved in raising small children in a non-traditional queer family.

Both films were commissioned by NBPC and ITVS for the Masculinity Project, funded by the Ford Foundation.

The last short film of the series delves into the gay porn industry, taking on a Black queer perspective. "Race & Sex" profiles San Francisco based adult model and producer Race Cooper. One segment of a longer documentary, this short illuminates why Race suddenly decided to become a porn entrepreneur after working in the mainstream for so many years and how this move affected his relationships with friends and family. Also examined is whether or not his starring in and producing his own adult films is a form of self-empowerment within an industry known for exploiting Black gay men.
